American Murder: Gabby Petito (2025) Series Review: Beyond the Headlines

Watch this series right now:

Even here in the Philippines, we remember the gripping case of Gabby Petito’s disappearance in 2021. Coming into this docuseries, we were already familiar with the tragic story on some level. While American Murder: Gabby Petito doesn’t necessarily present new revelations, it offers a deeper, more intimate look into the realities behind social media stardom and the pressure to maintain a picture-perfect life online.

The documentary follows young couple Gabby Petito and Brian Laundrie as they embark on a cross-country van trip, hoping to establish themselves as travel vloggers. However, what begins as an aspirational journey unravels into tragedy as cracks in their relationship—and instances of domestic violence—surface, ultimately leading to a devastating outcome.

Though the series is well-paced and emotionally compelling, certain creative choices, such as the use of AI to recreate Gabby’s voice, feel unnecessary and unsettling. However, these missteps are minor in comparison to the docuseries' ability to peel back the layers of Gabby and Brian’s relationship, the struggles of building an online brand, and the chilling extent to which Brian’s family went to protect him from authorities. Each episode ends on a strong note, ensuring that every chapter feels substantial and complete. While some viewers may find the lack of new information disappointing, the documentary succeeds in delivering a deeply human, emotionally resonant experience. It’s a heartbreaking reminder of how easily reality can be distorted—both in relationships and through the lens of social media.
