Fantasy Island (2020): Movie Review

As expected, "Fantasy Island" was a film setup for failure from the beginning. What can we expect from a premise that's really out-of-this-world? There's nothing really right about the film but if you have the correct mindset going in - which is to expect nothing extraordinary - then there are pockets of areas within the film that we found entertaining and interesting.

The enigmatic Mr. Roarke (Michael Peña) makes the most desired fantasies of his lucky guests come true at a luxurious and remote tropical resort. The five guests are Gwen (Maggie Q) who wants to relive the day she regrets most, Melanie (Lucy Hale) who wants revenge on her childhood bully, Patrick (Austin Stowell) a police officer who wants to enlist, and brothers Brax and J.D. (Jimmy O. Yang and Ryan Hansen) who both want to experience in "having it all". But when the fantasies turn out to be very "real", the guests learn that the fantasies can easily turn into nightmares without an easy way to get out.
"Fantasy Island" is one of those films that no one asked for. And the end result fits right into that segment. There's nothing extremely horrible about it but there's nothing good about it also. The narrative was just all over the place devolving into a whodunnit scenario by the end. The ending was actually unexpected and unpredictable but its the kind of unpredictable that you know was plucked out of thin air or basically out of nowhere.Come to think of it, this was actually how we felt about the whole story and how it developed. The movie tries to interweave all the characters' backstories but it just didn't come off as natural or creative. Surprisingly, even with huge issues, the film came off entertaining. It had some decent action, horror, and acting if we're being completely honest. At the end of the day, "Fantasy Island" will be an experience that once it ends, you'll completely forget about it. It's not a complete time-waster but there are better films to trade your time with.
