Identity Thief: Movie Review

"Identity Thief" proudly states that the film is from the director of "Horrible Bosses" and producers of "Ted". Definitely, two awesome films that could sway someone's decision to jump into the folly that is "Identity Thief". You see, look's can be deceiving and "Identity Thief" is one of those films that tries to bankroll worthless by masking the real thing with stuff that do not and will not affect the film's quality. Even Jason Bateman or the extremely amazing Melissa McCarthy could not save this film.

Sandy Patterson (Jason Bateman) gets a call from a woman saying someone attempted to steal his identity. She tells him about an identity protection service and asks him for his name, date of birth, and social security number. Sandy, naive as he is, gives all details to this woman. Little does he know that his identity is actually about to be stolen. That woman is Diana (Melissa McCarthy). Diana abuses Sandy's credit card has and even gets herself arrested as Sandy Patterson. Soon enough, the card is maxed out and as Sandy tries to get gas he discovers that someone is using his credit card in Florida. Sandy's problem does not stop from there as he finds out that he has a police record and worse, drug possession charges. Sandy decides that he must find the person who is impersonating him or else he risks losing everything he has.

"Identity thief" starts out interesting. The premise in fact works perfectly in a comedy film. But after the first few minutes, the film fails to make anything astoundingly good. Instead, it dabbles into a downward spiral of "been there, done that" material. The story itself is somewhat of a mess and even for a non-serious film, it does not make sense. To the point that even our protagonist (without spoiling much) decides to do some illegal stuff himself to solve a problem. Gags are funny the first time but the rinse-and-repeat method "Identity Thief" ultimately makes every gag or one-liner unfunny. The long running time also does not help this film further. Almost two hours of dead air surely sucks. Sadly, there's wasted potential in Identity Thief". Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy is an awesome duo. Even with piss poor material, the two actors shine. Avoid "Identity Thief" at all costs.
