Lemuel Gulliver (Jack Black) has been stuck in the mail room department for a decade already. During that time, he hasn't really moved up in the corporate ladder. Gulliver also has a crush on Darcy (Amanda Peet) - a travel journalist working in the same company. Gulliver tells Darcy that he is a great writer and a well-traveled man, just so he could impress her. Darcy decides to get Gulliver to cover the Bermuda Triangle when she reads the highly-plagiarized test article submitted by Gulliver. When Gulliver arrives at the infamous Bermuda Triangle, his boat gets caught in a whirlpool of water and then wakes up in an island inhabited by tiny people called Lilliputians.
"Gulliver's Travels" is an enjoyable, light-hearted and funny film. Truly, Jack Black is in the right form in playing the updated version of Lemuel Gulliver. The story can be classified as too simple, to the point that its almost nonsensical. If you expect to learn something significant from this film, then let us say this straight up, you won't. The effects are average. It's above any made-for-television but it's also below what the current Hollywood standards are. What saves it though is the comedy and in the end, this is a film that intends to be funny. On that regard, it passed our standards with flying colors. What's right with "Gulliver's Travels" is ironically also its own demise. A simple plot delivered with simple style. Don't expect anything more than your typical comedic fare and you won't leave disappointed.
