Most people only know Batman: The Dark Knight which is obviously one of the best Batman films made and in contention as one of the best films this year. Not many know though about a direct-to-DVD animation film which was released almost the same time The Dark Knight premiered. That film is Batman: Gotham Knight. Think of this release as more on the likes of The Animatrix This is our take on this infamous adaptation of the Dark Knight.
The film is set between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight and it is actually composed of six animated short films which last more or less ten minutes each. Each one chronicles one specific topic about the Batman; from his former training in dealing with pain with Cassandra to different eye witness accounts of him fighting crime. The animated films has each of their own distinct anime-inspired visuals and each are somewhat loosely-connected. Batman himself is voiced by Kevin Conroy, Batman's voice in Batman: The Animated Series.
For us, the six short films were really well-made and each one of them was a gem in its own right. Every plot was well-written and really showcases Batman's uniqueness as a superhero. Batman is not like Superman who cannot be pierced by bullets and Batman is not like the the other super heroes who have their own special abilities that are beyond human. No! Batman is a person behind that suit and he gets hurt and he feels pain. Nothing showcases this more than these six short films. It really leaves you appreciating Batman more as a hero. The anime-themed visuals were really awesome too; we could really see how distinct and diverse Japanese cartoons are. It made us relive some of those Mazinger Z and Voltes V days even. Watch this one yourselves and find out how deep our Batman truly is; fans or the average joe, would really appreciate this classic. Get it at your nearest video stores NOW!
